For Gabriela Cazares Crump, a recent graduate from the Madera Center Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program, nursing is her second career. The 35-year-old is married with two small children. She worked in a group home and also for the Fresno County Probation Department at the Elkhorn Boot Camp as a counselor for over two years.

Gabriela completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University, Fresno and then a master’s degree in criminology in 2002. moved to California when she was young. School was not always a priority for Gabriela, as she did not graduate from high school and received her GED in 1991.

“My goal is to eventually earn my registered nursing degree and work in forensic nursing.” – Gabriela Cazares Crump

After having children, she decided to start a new career and began taking pre-requisite classes for nursing in 2003. “I decided to start in the LVN program because of the difficulty of getting into registered nursing programs,” she said.

She was accepted into the Madera Center LVN program in August of 2007. “It was a very demanding program, and they teach you to always be on your toes,” she added. “I learned so much. It was challenging and taught me how to organize my time with both school and my family.”

“Gabriela was always very studious and self-assured. She listened to instructors, peers, and patients, which is an important quality in nursing,” said Dee Chamberlain, nursing coordinator at the Madera Center.

Currently Gabriela is working at the Willow Creek Skilled Facility in Fresno and is awaiting results from her LVN state board exams. “My goal is to eventually earn my registered nursing degree and work in forensic nursing,” she added. “I really like what I am doing now. It is very rewarding, and I am looking forward to a challenging career in nursing,” said Gabriella.
