Reedley College opens new Math Center
The Reedley College Math Center is now open in the library at Reedley College. The Math Center is staffed with a faculty member who is available to help students with their questions. The center is currently open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The Math Center also provides students with computers, extra textbooks, and other math information.
The Math Center is one of the projects funded by a $1.7 million Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) grant from the federal government. The STEM grant will be used to encourage Hispanic and low-income students to major in STEM-related fields and transfer to universities. Reedley College is preparing the next generation of doctors, nurses, engineers, computer programmers, and crime scene investigators. According to Dean of Instruction Jan Dekker, “We plan to increase the number of students who will be transferring to UC Merced and CSU Fresno.”
The Math Center will move to its permanent home—FEM 1—in the fall. The room is currently under construction. The center of the room will be similar to the existing math center and filled with computers and materials. The perimeter of the room will house offices for 10 math instructors. The Math Center will also include a Discovery and Career Center to assist students exploring potential career paths. In addition, the Discovery and Career Center counselor will help the students transfer to a four-year college or university.
