State Center Community College District received national honors from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR). The organization’s Paragon Awards recognize outstanding achievement in marketing and communications at community and technical colleges. The awards for the 2009 competition, which drew more than 1,700 entries, were presented in March at the NCMPR national conference. The Paragon Awards are unique in that they are the only nationwide awards honoring marketing and PR professionals at two-year colleges.
This year SCCCD brought home two Gold Awards—the highest level of recognition. The first award was for a “Welcome” brochure and the second for a pair of radio advertisements. Both winning entries were designed and created by Katrina Neufeld of Neu Design in Fresno.

The brochure, Neufeld said, was meant to “inspire and help generate interest in the District while they seek community partnerships, and meet with civic leaders and potential donors.” The design and color palette had an “organic, earthy, and friendly feel, with images that echo our agricultural heritage,” she said.
The radio advertisements were part of the fall enrollment campaign for SCCCD. Due to the demographic diversity of potential students, Neufeld created two versions: one for younger, post-high school students and one for older reentry students. Neufeld explained: “The radio spots were designed to illustrate two potential pathways when pursuing higher education. The spot targeting the younger demographic is lighthearted, whereas the spot targeting the reentry students takes on a slightly more serious tone. This is important because the older student has more responsibility and complex considerations when faced with such a significant decision.”
The awards demonstrate the continued commitment of SCCCD to deliver quality, effective marketing materials to students and the community.
