Reedley College receives grant for workforce development
Although Reedley College is located in Fresno County, many Tulare County residents choose to attend classes there—either at the main campus or at the Dinuba Vocational Center, which partners with Reedley College. That’s why the Tulare County Workforce Investment Board recently awarded Reedley College a $150,000 grant to add new sections of vocational programs for students who meet eligibility requirements.
“The idea is to provide short-term job training to get people employed.”– David Clark
The funding is a result of federal stimulus legislation earlier this year. Counties can use the funds to “help displaced workers, so they can find jobs again,” according to David Clark, dean of instruction at Reedley College. “The idea is to provide short-term job training to get people employed.”
With the grant money, Reedley College will offer additional Nursing Assistant, Health Care Interpreter, and Manufacturing sections. “The Tulare County Workforce Investment Board has projected that these are occupations that are emerging for Tulare County,” Clark said.
A recent California law requires health care facilities to provide certified interpreters for patients, making the Health Care Interpreter program especially relevant. Currently, Reedley College offers the only Health Care Interpreter program in the San Joaquin Valley.
The additional program sections, because they are funded through the Tulare County Workforce Investment Board, are only available to residents of Tulare County who are eligible for public financial assistance. These students will receive instruction and materials at no expense.
Similar grants are possible for Reedley College and other SCCCD colleges and campuses as Fresno and Madera County Workforce Investment Boards allocate their own funding.
